Who were the Britanni (Ancient Britons) that lived in Britain prior to the Roman invasion and why do we know so little about them?

The only information we have about the early tribes that inhabited Europe at this time comes from the writings of Julius Caesar. All we know is that Gaul, just across the channel, was divided into three parts inhabited by the Belgae, Aquitani and Celts (Gauls). The Celts, who many think were the Ancients Britons, occupied that part of Gaul which is now central France. Some scholars are of the opinion that the Britanni were a separate tribe who’s language was similar to that spoken by the tribes in Gaul but even this we do not know for sure.
